Day 88 – Sick of the wind

Wednesday, 22 September 2010

Oh for goodness sake wind, GO AWAY!!!! Everyone morning it is the same thing. Although this morning we did have a plane fly over looking like it was in trouble. It was very low to the water and looked like it had smoke coming out of it. We watched intently and I quickly grabbed the camera. It flew past the headland and then we didn’t hear it. Nathan jumped up on the roof rack and said he couldn’t see it anymore, but he didn’t hear a thud either, so we figured it was okay. Nath flicked the CB on just in case, but there was no mayday call.

About lunch time it eventually eased off, so Nathan went fishing in the boat by himself again. Not long after he left I noticed smoke coming from the area we had camped before moving. The fire got really big and I was a bit concerned that it would come this way. Nathan had seen it too and headed over towards it. I figured that if he was concerned about our camp now that he would come back in. I decided just to keep an eye on it and be prepared to pack quickly if it got too close.

Linda and Adam had been up in that direction in the morning, so when they came back I headed next door (hehe) to ask if they drove through the fire. As I arrived the guy camped up behind them arrived and said that he had just driven through it and the guy camped up there had already called the fire brigade. It turns out the guy was James, who Nathan and the kids had spoken to. A little while later while the kids were down playing on the beach again and I was sitting in Adam and Linda’s camp, a fireman arrived to tell us to be prepared that we may have to evacuate during the night if the wind changed direction. We asked if it was under control and he said for now as it is heading inland. He told us that the fire was started by a guy going for a crap in the scrub and lighting his toilet paper rather than leaving it on the ground, but the fire got away from him. It was James. He was honest about it, and he was trying to do the right thing by not littering, but it was just too windy. We all laughed so hard.

Nathan came back as the wind had picked up again with no fish. He was feeling a bit seedy this time. The other fishing guy came back with fish and fed the heads to the eagles.

Linda and I went and took some sunset shots again tonight. It is great having someone to do it with.

I phoned the fridge repair place today and it still has not been looked at. So much for a 48 hour turn around! Oh and the ice in the esky is gone and we have only water left.

Until next time…. Happy and Safe Travels.
