Day 184 – Heading to the Nullarbor

Tuesday, 28 December 2010

Yay, we can finally get back in t-shirts and shorts rather than the tracksuits we have lived in for the past couple of weeks. Even though we were up early as it was warm in the camper, we still didn’t get under way until 8.45am. Found 2 more big ticks in the car as were leaving the rest area.

We stopped in Esperance for water, diesel and some groceries and had a walk around town. We then headed out to Daniels Rd to Membinup Beach where we had stayed 5 years ago. It was very busy and almost full. It tainted our memory of having the place to ourselves last time. We decided to leave and head up to the Nullarbor via Parmango and Balladonia Roads. We ended up finding Deralinya Homestead and Tim and Roger. They have been restoring the place for years and it looks great. Please don’t scratch names into the lime wash on the walls as it is really hard to get out! Write in the book as your name will stay there forever, instead of causing Roger and Tim more work. We enjoyed a cuppa with them and were told a lot about the history of the area. It was great. We left there just after 5.30pm; we had been there for a couple of hours.

We decided to have dinner at Balladonia Roadhouse as neither of us couple be bothered cooking, and we bought diesel as well. We finally left there at 8pm and it was a bit fresh. We started the drive of 90 mile straight – the longest straight stretch of highway in Australia, at 8.30pm. Tonight we have stopped at Woorlba Homestead Rest Area.
