Day 151 – Steep Point, the most Western Point of Australia

Thursday, 25 November 2010

Hendrix arrived in our bed this morning wet as he had done a wee in his bed. So before the sun was up we were out putting his bedding in a bucket of water. Seen as I was up I figured I would take some photos before heading back to bed. When we finally got up about 7pm we had breakfast and packed up. Les and Maree took Elokin and Hendrix for a walk along the beach and found a rock to jump off. We left just after 10.30am headed for Steep Point. It was very windy!

After getting a bit lost we eventually found Steep Point and had photos with the sign. We then headed down to watch some guys balloon fishing off the northern point. While we were there one hooked up a huge bronzie shark which he worked for a while, then swapped with his friend to have a go. It did eventually break them off.

We had lunch at Scavengers Camp in Shelter Bay, before heading to Thunder Bay and the Blowholes. We found a clearing to potentially camp in before driving to see the blowholes. They were a fizzer and weren’t going off. The coastline here is impressive. These are the Zuytdorp Cliffs. Looking at the ocean here on a windy day sure does give me a new appreciation of its power.

We headed back to the clearing we had found and set up camp. Nathan and I went for a walk down to the cliffs in the afternoon and watched the waves crash into them. We found another place to view the blowholes that was better as we could see the caves the water has to go into.

In the evening Nathan took Elokin and Hendrix to run around and burn off some energy. They ended up rolling down a sand dune before getting the boogie board and sliding down it. They had a blast and came back covered in sand. It is so windy here the sand whips. We had to hide out to cook dinner and eat it in Les and Maree’s camper.

Until next time…. Happy and Safe Travels.
